Ksenia Berestetska’s won the No. 5 singles match to claim match point and lead the University of Akron tennis team to a 4-3 win over West Virginia on Friday in Morgantown, W.Va.
Olga Shkundina won her No. 1 singles match, Martina Zerbola won the No. 2 singles match and Karolina Maksimava won the No. 4 singles match to lead the Zips (2-0).
Shannon Newnes and Shkundina won the No. 1 doubles match, and Madison Cohen and Zerbola won the No. 3 doubles match to help the Zips defeat the Mountaineers (0-1) for the second consecutive meeting.
The Zips will play two matches today, with the first match at the University of Dayton at 3 p.m. and against Wright State at 7 p.m.
Swimming and diving
The University of Akron swimming and diving team defeated Youngstown State 183-113 on Friday night at the Ocasek Natatorium in Akron.
The Zips finished first in several swimming events, including the 200-yard freestyle, the 100 breast stroke, the 200 butterfly, the 1650 freestyle and the 400 medley relay.
Juniors Kelsey Ferrante and Taylor Hart finished first and second, respectively, in the 200-yard freestyle. The Zips then earned a sweep in the 100 breast stroke with senior Kendra Colby in first place, junior Amanda Lawson in second place and sophomore Hannah Raspopovich in third place.
Erin Seiler won the 200 butterfly with a time of 2:07.11 and was followed by Raspopovich in second place.
The Zips began the meet strong with a first-place finish in the 400 medley relay. Ludwika Synzal, Raspopovich, Meghan Pearson and Ferrante won the event with a time of 3:56.97. The Zips placed first in the next event, the 1650 freestyle, with Ashley Drazkowski and Kara Kaulius finishing in first and second place, respectively.
Freshman Paige Kelkenberg won the 1-meter and the 3-meter to lead the diving team.
Track and field
Mount Union named Collister Fahie assistant track and field coach.
Fahie, an Akron native and Firestone graduate, has spent the past two years as an assistant coach at the University of Akron.
Fahie competed at UA and was a two-time Mid-American Conference long jump champion as well as team MVP and an All-American in the long jump in 2011.
Fahie has a bachelor’s degree in sales and marketing and a master’s degree in sports science from Akron.
