The University of Akron hall of fame class of 2011 includes Cheryl Bowles (women’s basketball), Chris Garrison Byers (volleyball), Zac Derr (football), Ray Jackson (cross country, track), Don Lombardi (baseball) and Billy Rudison (football).
These Varsity “A” Association Sports Hall Of Fame inductees will be honored at a banquet Feb. 10 at UA’s Martin Center.
The Gary and Karen Taylor family will be recognized as the 34th Kenneth “Red” Cochrane Meritorious Service Award recipients, and Ernie Stadvec will be recognized as the 24th Mike Krino Varsity “A” Achievement Award recipient.
The UA Varsity “A” Sports Hall Of Fame now includes 353 members.
Wrestling
Kent State freshman Ian Miller was named the Mid-American Conference Wrestler of the Week.
Miller, the No. 1-ranked 149-pounder in the conference, defeated Central Michigan’s Joe Kielbasa, the MAC’s No. 2-ranked wrestler in that weight class, 13-5 behind five takedowns.
It was Kent State’s only major decision in its 22-13 win.
Miller is 24-3 this season with 10 pins, and is 21-1 since Nov. 12.
Softball
The National Pro Fastpitch 2012 College Draft will be held at the Peabody Hotel in Memphis, Tenn., on March 7 at 6 p.m.
The Racers hold the third pick of the draft, which consists of five rounds.
