The University of Akron women’s tennis team kept its perfect season going with a 4-3 win over Kentucky on Tuesday at the LaTuchie Tennis Center in Stow.
Zara Harutyunyan won the first singles match in three sets in the last match of the day to break a 3-3 tie and give the Zips (11-0) the win in the first meeting between the universities.
Olga Shkundina won the second singles match, and Prang Pantusart won the fourth singles match and teamed with Harutyunyan to win at first doubles.
The Zips play at Dartmouth on Friday and Brown on Sunday.
Golf
The Kent State women’s golf team finished its second tournament of the spring with an 11th-place finish at the Central District Invitational at the River Wilderness Golf Club in Parrish, Fla.
The Golden Flashes shot a 293 team score on Monday but could not keep up the momentum and finished with a 305 on Tuesday to end the tournament.
Senior Mercedes Germino shot a 1-over-par 73 on Tuesday to finish the tournament tied for fourth place with a 1-over-par 217.
Senior Mandi Morrow (Kent Roosevelt) shot 73 on Tuesday and finished tied for 31st.
Freshman Jennifer Ha finished in 47th place, senior Shamira Marshall finished tied for 57th and sophomore Erin Hawe tied for 65th.
Field hockey
Kent State University Athletic Director Joel Nielsen announced Tuesday that field hockey coach Kathleen Wiler was awarded a four-year contract extension.
Wiler, a two-time Mid-American Conference Coach of the Year, will be guiding the Flashes through the 2015-16 season. During Wiler’s six seasons at KSU, the Flashes have had four All-Americans and two MAC player of the year award winners.
Kent State is 25-5 record in the past three seasons and has won three regular-season league titles during that time.
Pro softball
The Racers signed second baseman Aja Paculba on Tuesday.
Paculba played at the University of Florida and had a career .340 batting average with 253 runs scored, 279 hits and 35 home runs.
