Former St. Vincent-St. Mary golfer Jack Uecker finished in a tie for eighth place at the Ohio Amateur golf tournament at Brookside Golf and Country Club in Worthington.
Uecker, who now plays at Wittenberg, shot a 289 in the four-day tournament, 7 shots behind the overall champion.
Kyle Kmiecik of Kent tied for 13th at 291, Daniel Belden of Akron tied for 23rd at 295 and Nick Paxos of Canton tied for 37th at 299.
Basketball
Kyle Peterson, C.J. Oldham and Brian Walsh of the University of Akron were named to the National Association of Basketball Coaches Honors Court for excellence in academics.
The NABC Honors Court recognized collegiate basketball student-athletes who excelled in academics during the 2011-12 season.
Walsh, a junior, graduated in May with a degree in business with a 3.369 GPA.
Oldham finished his first season with the Zips with a 3.250 GPA.
Peterson, a four-year letter winner, graduated with a degree in biology with a 3.767 GPA.
Track and field
Incoming University of Akron freshman Shawn Barber placed third in the pole vault at the World Junior Track and Field Championships Thursday in Barcelona, Spain.
Barber, who signed a national letter of intent to attend the University of Akron last April, posted a mark of 18 feet, 2.5 inches.
The UA school record is 18-1 set by five-time All-American John Russell.
Barber recently won several outdoor meets, including the Texas Relays, Texas 4A state meet, Great Southwest and New Balance Nationals Outdoor.
Barber finished fourth in his bid to make the Canadian Olympic team last month.
Baseball
Kent State baseball coach Scott Stricklin was named the 2012 American Baseball Coaches Association/Rawlings NCAA Mideast Region Coach of the Year.
Stricklin earned the same honor last year and was named Mid-American Conference coach of the year for the second year in a row and third time in his career at KSU.
Stricklin led the Golden Flashes to a program-record 47 wins this season and the first College World Series berth in school history.
Lacrosse
Jason Fautas has been hired by Walsh University to be coach and director of the men’s lacrosse program.
Fautas previously was an assistant at Hartwick and a defensive coordinator and first assistant coach at Lafayette.
Pro softball
The Racers announced the signing of free-agent pitcher Erin Arevalo from the University of Georgia.
Arevalo anchored the Bulldogs’ pitching staff in 2012 with a 27-9 record and a 1.40 ERA and became the fifth pitcher in Georgia history to record 200 strikeouts in a season.
