Corey Conners shot a hole-in-one and helped Kent State University increase its commanding lead for the Mid-American Conference Championship and inch closer to a record sixth consecutive outright team title.
The Golden Flashes carded the day’s only under-par round at 6 under par and a team total of 282 that moved them to 12 under par for the tournament.
Conners, who was the MAC Championship medalist in 2012, aced the 192-yard 12th hole to claim the individual lead at 12 under par.
The Akron Zips finished the day with a 54-hole score of 875 (plus-11) to stay in second place in the tournament.
Three Zips sit inside the top-15, led by Charlie Bull and Ryan Harris. Both are tied for third place with scores of 2-under 214. Harris’ birdie on No. 18 gave him a round of even-par 72 while Bull rallied with birdies on Nos. 17 and 18 for a round of 3-over 75.
Alex Mikos was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded in the bottom of the ninth to score the winning run Friday night and give the host Kent State Golden Flashes a 4-3 win over Northern Illinois.
Northern Illinois (14-31, 8-11) took a slight 3-1 advantage in the seventh before Kent State (29-16, 13-6) took control in the bottom of the inning for a tie.
Justin Wagler led off the inning with a single before T.J. Sutton was hit by a pitch to put two on. Sawyer Polen then came off the bench for a pinch-hit single up the middle to earn a RBI. Jon Wilson followed with a sacrifice fly to knot the score at three runs apiece.
In the ninth, a throwing error and two walks loaded the bases for Miklos to be hit, enabling the Flashes to claim a walk-off victory.
Jessica Schneider was a perfect 3-for-3 at the plate and scored twice as the University of Akron Zips used two three-run innings to defeat Western Michigan 6-2 on Senior Day on Saturday.
Akron (26-14, 11-6) took a 3-1 lead after the first inning and never trailed the Broncos (17-33, 8-13) after that.
Shawna Mailloux turned in a multi-hit effort that included a double, while Kellie Roudabush and McKenzi Rhodes each chipped in two RBI.
