On the record: Kent State’s Kim Preston sets pole vault mark

Though it had only a partial squad, the Kent State indoor track and field team had several terrific performances at the Penn State Sykes and Sabock Challenge Cup at University Park, Pa.

The Golden Flashes’ women’s squad won three titles and was fifth out of 16 teams.
Kim Preston captured the pole vault title. The senior’s winning performance of 13 feet, 1.5 inches, set a meet record.

Penina Acayo won her fourth triple jump in four meets this season with a jump of 40-11.75 on her final attempt.

Joh’vonnie Mosley won the women’s shot put for the fifth time this season, easily besting the field by almost two feet with a throw of 51-09.

Former area high school stars who placed include Lauren Noe of Cuyahoga Falls, who was ninth in the shot put with a personal best of 60-10; Brooke Hutchings from Wadsworth, seventh in the long jump (17-10.75); and Danielle Dougherty from Woodridge, 10th with a personal best of 2:15.85 in the 800 meters.

The men’s team finished 11th with one top performance and 16 personal records.
The men had third-place finishes by Bob Crabtree in the weight throw with a toss of 61-05.5, his season’s best, and Rob Falchi in the triple jump with 48-11.

Andrew Goodwin, a sophomore, was fourth in his first 5.000-meter event of the season with a personal best of 15:04.06.

Dillon Corbett of Orrville placed ninth in the 400 meters.

UA track and field

The University of Akron’s Alex McCune finished fourth in the heptathlon at the Akron Invitational on Saturday at Stile Athletic Field House.

McCune, a freshman, finished the two-day, seven-event competition with 5,120 points.
After starting the day in sixth place, McCune was sixth in the 60-meter hurdles in 8.55 and tied for seventh in the pole vault, clearing the bar at 13-05.25

The day finished with McCune coming in third .

Another Zip, John Dahlstrand, was ninth with 4,582 points. Dahlstrand was 11th in the 60-meter hurdles and the pole vault, and was sixth in the 1,000 meters.

Heath Nickles of Ohio State won the event with 5,624 points.
