The Kent State baseball team swept a doubleheader Friday at the Coca-Cola Classic in Rock Hill, S.C.
The Golden Flashes (3-2) defeated Coppin State 5-0 in the first game and defeated Winthrop 8-5 in the second.
Starting pitcher John Birkbeck allowed three hits and struck out five batters in five scoreless innings for his first win of the season in the first game.
Cody Koch had three hits, and Sawyer Polen, Zarley Zalewski, Justin Wagler and Curtis Olvey each had an RBI for the Golden Flashes.
Pollen and Koch each had an RBI in the second game, and Wagler had two RBI singles to help the Flashes rally for the win. Alex Miklos had three hits, and T.J. Sutton had two hits for the Flashes in the second game.
Starting pitcher Brian Clark gave up five runs on six hits and struck out four in five innings for his first win of the season. Eric Dorsch worked two perfect innings for his first save of the season.
• St. Louis scored the winning run in the fifth inning Friday to defeat the University of Akron 2-1 at the Duke Baseball Classic in Durham, N.C. Matt LaRocca had an RBI double to lead the Zips.
Kent State lost both games of a doubleheader Friday at the Florida Atlantic Invitational in Boca Raton.
The Golden Flashes (4-3) lost the first game to Pittsburgh 1-0 after the Panthers (6-5) scored the winning run in the top of the sixth inning. Lauren McNeil (0-1) gave up one run on six hits in the complete-game loss.
The second game proved no different for the Flashes. The Wolverines (8-2) jumped out to a 4-1 lead in the third inning and never let up. Emma Johnson gave up four runs on seven hits and suffered her second loss of the season.
Maddy Grimm had an RBI single to lead the Flashes’ offense.
