The Kent State University men’s golf team shot an 8-under-par 276 on Friday to finish the second round of the NCAA Central Regional in a three-way tie for second at the University of Michigan Golf Course in Ann Arbor.
Junior Kevin Miller shot a 3-under 68 and senior Mackenzie Hughes and sophomore Corey Connors each shot a 2-under 69 to lead the Golden Flashes in day two of the three-round tournament.
Sophomore Taylor Pendrith shot a 1-under 70, and the Golden Flashes shot the second-lowest NCAA Regional single-round score in program history.
Hughes is tied for ninth and Connors is tied for 12th as the Flashes prepare for the final round, which begins at 8:40 a.m. today.
The Flashes are tied with Oregon and Texas Christian and are just 1 stroke behind Southern California for the top spot.
University of Akron sophomore Charlie Bull is tied for 38th place after the second round. Bull, competing as an individual, shot an even-par 71 on Friday.
Eleven Kent State players were named to Phil Steele’s 2012 Preseason All-Mid American Conference Team on Thursday, including seniors Brian Winters and C.J. Malauulu and junior Roosevelt Nix.
Senior Luke Batton was named to the second team, and senior Jake Dooley and junior Luke Wollet were named to the third team.
Seniors Norman Wolfe, Dana Brown, Freddy Corez and sophomores Calvin Tiggle and Trayion Durham were named to the fourth team.
Track and field
The University of Akron will send 14 student-athletes to the NCAA East Preliminary on May 24-26 in Jacksonville, Fla., including Shawn Light (pole vault), Tyshaun Peoples (long jump), Ariane Beaumont-Courteau (pole vault), Alexis Cooks (discuss) and Brittany Funk (hammer).
The top 12 finishers in each qualifying round will advance to the NCAA Championships in Des Moines, Iowa, from June 6-9.
