On the record: Maria Moore, Clayton Murphy lead UA cross country team

Maria Moore placed second with a time of 18:35 to lead the women and Clayton Murphy led the men with a third-place finish and a time of 20:28 as the University of Akron cross country team opened the 2013 season in the 45th annual Tommy Evans Invitational on Thursday in Akron.

Moore placed second to Malone’s Tina Oprean (18:32) and Youngstown State’s Eric Rupe won the men’s race with a time of 20:23.

Michaela Foisy finished in 12th place, with Irene Frangos (18th place), Jillian Roth (20th), Morgan Willis (21st), Marisa Papp (22nd) and Sarah Kupniewski (25th) rounding out the top 25 for the Zips women.

Daniel Zupan finished in sixth place, Kyle Cochrun placed seventh and Trevor Norris placed eighth for the Zips men.

The UA cross country team will travel to the Blue Grass Invitational in Lexington, Ky., on Sept. 14.

Basketball

The Canton Charge, the NBA Developmental League affiliate of the Cavaliers, will open the 2013-14 season at home on Friday, Nov. 22, against the Erie BayHawks, according to the schedule released by the league Thursday.

The Charge, the 2012-13 East Division champions, will play a 50-game schedule with two games at the annual NBA D-League showcase in Reno, Nev., in January. The Charge will host the defending champion Rio Grande Valley Vipers on Feb. 18 and the Los Angeles D-Fenders make their first trip to Canton for a two-game series on March 14-15.
