The Kent State women’s basketball team lost to host Eastern Kentucky 56-42 on Wednesday. The Golden Flashes (0-2) had trouble converting their shot attempts, shooting only 25 percent from the floor and going 1-for-14 on 3-point attempts.
The Flashes will play their home opener at 7 p.m. Monday when they host Cincinnati.
Ohio Northern senior Chris Matejka, an alumnus of Cloverleaf High School, is the 2012 Ohio Athletic Conference Midfielder of the Year. Matejka finished the season with five goals and seven assists.
Baldwin Wallace senior and Walsh Jesuit alumnus Pat Brennan and John Carroll sophomore Brian Potocnik of Aurora also received first-team honors.
Track and field
University of Akron freshman pole vaulter Shawn Barber was named the No. 2 High School Track & Field Athlete of the year for 2012 by Track & Field News.
Barber was second to sprinter Tyreek Hill from Douglas, Ga., despite earning eight first-place votes to Hill’s seven.
Barber broke a national high school record that had stood for 13 years with a pole vault jump of 18-3.50 at the AAU Junior Olympics last August.
Mount Union sophomore Nicole Snyder and senior Kristen Gromes have been named to the American Volleyball Coaches Association Division III All-American teams. Snyder is an alumna of Mentor Lake Catholic and Gromes of Fairless. The duo helped Mount Union earn its first regular season OAC championship in 2012.
