Four Kent State wrestlers earned No. 1 rankings in the Mid-American Conference preseason coaches poll on Wednesday. Based on the individual rankings, the Golden Flashes are projected to win the 2012 MAC title with 29 points, ahead of second-place Central Michigan’s 18.
Seniors Nic Bedelyon (125 pounds), Brendan Barlow (285) and Ross Tice (165) were all picked in the top spot by conference coaches along with junior Keith Witt (197).
Senior Marcel Clopton and sophomore Brandonn Johnson were chosen for the No. 2 spot in their weight classes. Bedelyon and Barlow have each won MAC individual titles and are ranked in the Top 10 in every preseason national poll.
PGA Tour in Akron
The PGA Tour released its 2012 schedule, and Akron’s Firestone Country Club again will host the Bridgestone Invitational July 30 to August 5.
There are 45 official money tournaments, the same as this season with 37 during the regular season, four PGA Tour Playoffs for the FedExCup tournaments and the four-tournament Fall Series.
• University of Akron senior Katie Jenior was named the Mid-American Conference Women’s Golfer of the Week.
The honor is the first for Jenior, a Rootstown graduate, this season.
She helped UA to its second team title in as many seasons at the Zippy Invitational on Tuesday at Rosemont Country Club in Fairlawn.
UA posted a 24-stroke victory with a 29-over-par 597, a 36-hole school record.
Jenior won the event with a 3-over 145 (73-72). Her score is 1 shot shy of Kristen Hill’s school record of 144 at the Cardinal Classic (Sept. 22-23, 2008).
• Kent State sophomore Corey Conners was named the Mid-American Conference Men’s Golfer of the Week after finishing tied for third and leading the Golden Flashes to their second win of the season.
Conners posted an even-par 216 (75-71-70) at the Bank of Tennessee Intercollegiate at Blackthorn Club this past weekend.
KSU shot a final-round 278 to win the 15-team event by 7 strokes with a total of 5-over 869. The Flashes are ranked No. 12 nationally by Golfweek and No. 14 by Golfstat.com.
Walsh University set a school record for goals in a single game, and margin of victory, in a 15-0 shutout of host Fisher College on Monday.
The Cavaliers (13-1, 9-0) have won 12 in a row for the first time since 1993 and won their first American Mideast Conference title since 1994.
Senior George Moga (Springfield) scored three goals in the match. Senior Nathaniel Milhoan (Lake) and junior Chad Dickerhoof (Marlington) both scored two goals.
Other local players with a goal were senior Chad Flath (Wadsworth), Tim Cavanaugh (Wadsworth) and sophomore Marc Julian (GlenOak).

Junior Carley Adams (Louisville) scored three goals and sophomore Liz Broome (Chippewa) scored twice.
Other local players who scored were sophomore Lauren Jokovich (Jackson) and sophomore Brittany Kungle (Copley).
Oak Hill senior guard Chris Fairchild has given an commitment to play at Kent State, according to ESPN.com,
Fairchild is 6-foot-1 and weighs 273 pounds.
