The scene at Green Memorial Stadium on Saturday night was picturesque as a Green High School graduate led the AAA semiprofessional Ohio Legends football team to a 35-31 victory over the Columbus Fire to win the Heartland Memorial Trophy Championship game.

Quarterback Billy Cundiff, a graduate of Green High School and Ashland University, led the Legends’ fast-paced, aerial offense, completing 21-of-31 passes for 329 yards and three touchdowns.

Cundiff found former Seattle Seahawks wide receiver Ryan Travis several times, including a 65-yard strike to grab the lead midway through the fourth quarter.

The Fire gained possession with 1:32 remaining. Quarterback Antwan Gibbs struggled to find an open receiver as the Legends’ pass rush forced three errant throws and an interception by U.S. Army combat veteran and safety Aaron Mallette to seal the victory over last year’s league champions.
