The University of Akron men’s basketball team will open the 2013-14 season at home against Coastal Carolina and will also travel to Hawaii, participate in the ESPN Tip-Off Marathon and play 18 games in the Mid-American Conference, according to the 2013-14 schedule released on Tuesday.

The Zips host Coastal Carolina on Nov. 8 in the season opener and look to avenge last year’s season opening overtime loss to the Chanticleers.

The Zips’ nonconference schedule features four 20-win teams, four postseason participants and a trip to Hawaii to play in the 2013 Hawaiian Airlines Diamond Head Classic from Dec. 22-25, with all games airing on the ESPN family of networks beginning with Oregon St. on Dec. 22 at 7:30 p.m.

The Zips will travel to Moraga, Calif., to play St. Mary’s on Nov. 12 at 3 a.m. as a part of the ESPN Tip-Off Marathon. The Zips also travel to play Middle Tennessee St. on Nov. 16 and South Carolina on Dec. 28. The Zips also visit Detroit and Oral Roberts before closing out their nonconference schedule at home against Marshall on Jan. 2.

The MAC schedule begins at home on Jan. 8 against Ball State and also features games at Kent State on Feb. 1 and home games against Ohio on Feb. 22 and the season finale versus Kent on March 8. The Zips play four of their final five MAC games at home.

The 2014 First Energy MAC Tournament will be played at Quicken Loans Arena from March 10-15.
