The University of Akron men’s cross country team recorded a program-best ninth-place finish at the NCAA Great Lakes Regional on Friday in Madison, Wis.
The Zips finished with a team score of 283 points and two top-50 finishers, led by Brad Hough’s 33rd-place finish.
Hough finished the race in 31 minutes, 23 seconds to lead the Zips, while Clayton Murphy finished in 43rd place in 31:32.
Kyle Cochrun finished 53rd, Trevor Norris was 61st and Aaron Howkins placed 93rd for the men’s team.
Jillian Roth placed 81st with a time of 22:07 to lead the Akron women’s team.
Julie Shallman had 16 kills and Ashley Holder had 53 assists for the University of Akron volleyball team in a 3-1 loss to Bowling Green on Friday at Rhodes Arena.
The Zips (8-18, 2-13 Mid-American Conference) won the first set 26-24, but lost the next three sets to the Falcons (14-13, 10-5).
Kelsey Wilson had 14 kills, Alex Cocklin had 13 kills and Jill Paluch had 24 digs for the Zips.
The Zips will honor Cocklin, Paluch and Alex Wiederholt after tonight’s home match against Miami as a part of Senior Night. The match against the RedHawks is scheduled to begin at 5 p.m.
University of Akron women’s basketball coach Jodi Kest announced Wednesday that five players signed national letters of intent to play for the Zips beginning in the 2014-15 season.
Ohioans Megan Sefcik (Austintown Fitch) and Greta Burry (Cleveland St. Joseph Academy) will join Alli Ball (St. Louis, Mo.), Lauren Hung (Waterford, Mich.) and Kerri McMahan (Novi, Mich.) as freshmen next season in Akron.
Sefcik received All-Ohio special mention last season and is a two-time first team all-conference selection with the Falcons.
Burry has started for the varsity team in each of her three years at St. Joseph Academy.
