The University of Akron women’s golf team finished the first day of the 2014 Mid-American Conference Championship with four players inside the top 20 at the Hawthorns Golf & Country Club in Fishers, Ind.
The Zips finished the opening round with a team score of 25-over-par 313, and were in third place Friday.
Laura Murray shot 5-over-par 77 to finish in a tie for 13th to lead the Zips. Frida Fougberg was tied for 15th after a first-round 78.
Lina Bengtsson and Sara Chaves tied for 18th place, and Mallory Etcheberry rounded out the Zips’ top five in 45th place.
The Zips begin second-round play at 8 a.m. today.
• Cody Koch hit a three-run home run in the top of the eighth inning to give visiting Kent State a 7-5 win over Bowling Green.
The Flashes (28-13, 12-4 MAC) trailed 5-4 in the eighth inning when Koch homered to left field to score Alex Miklos and Jon Wilson.
T.J. Sutton (GlenOak) hit a two-run home run, and Miklos had an RBI single to lead the Flashes. Dan Kopcak gave up one run on one hit in three innings of relief for the win.
• Matt Rembielak had an RBI single, and Daulton Mosbarger had an RBI groundout to lead the University of Akron in a 3-2 loss to visiting Buffalo.
Kris Simonton had two hits and scored two runs, and starting pitcher John Valek (3-4) gave up two runs through six innings in the loss.
The Kent State softball team split a doubleheader with host Northern Illinois. The Golden Flashes (22-16, 8-4 MAC) lost the opening game 2-0, but rallied for a 7-5 win in 12 innings in the second game.
Ronnie Ladines hit a two-run home run in the fourth inning, a solo home run in the sixth inning and the game-winning two-run single in the 12th inning for the Flashes. Emma Johnson (13-7) allowed one run in six innings to earn the win.
