Shawn Barber, a University of Akron sophomore who has dual citizenship in the United States and Canada, set a Canadian national record with a pole vault of 18 feet, 6¾ inches at the Akron Invitational on Saturday.
Alex McCune (men’s heptathlon), Weronika Gaudyn (women’s triple jump), Annika Roloff (women’s pole vault) and the 1,600-meter relay team also set school records.
Kyle Tywon led the Kent State men’s field team, winning the high jump with a mark of 6-4¾.
Saturday’s match between Kent State and Northern Illinois came down to a tiebreaker, given to the Golden Flashes thanks to their 6-4 advantage in individual wins.
Caleb Marsh and Sam Wheeler posted the largest margins of defeat for the Flashes (10-8, 4-2 Mid-American Conference), winning by five points each in the 174- and 184-pound classes.
• The University of Akron split two games at the Tangi Tourism Lion Classic, falling 5-2 to Texas Southern in eight innings before defeating Nicholls State 1-0.
The Zips (3-1) scored all three of their runs with two outs.
Taryn Allmon went 2-for-3 with a double and two RBI against Texas Southern. Erin Seiler pitched a complete-game shutout against Nicholls State.
On Friday, the Zips swept their doubleheader against Texas Tech (4-3) and Alabama State (12-9).
• Kent State racked up nine hits and 12 walks in a 6-4 victory over George Washington.
Michele Duffy reached base all five times on four walks and a single for the Golden Flashes (3-0).
Maddy Grimm drove in three on a single and a triple.
Ronnie Ladines earned the win, improving to 1-0 and Lauren McNeil (Archbishop Hoban) earned her first save.
