Aodhan Quinn scored off an assist from Matt Foldesy in the 80th minute to lead the No. 8 University of Akron soccer team to a 2-0 win over host College of Charleston in the first game of the Nike/Aaron Olitsky Memorial Classic in Mt. Pleasant, S.C.
The Zips (1-0) added a second goal in the 87th minute on an own goal to put away the Cougars (0-1).
UA had an 11-3 advantage in shots on goal and goalkeeper Fernando Pina had three saves for the shutout.
The Zips play Furman on Sunday at noon in their final match of the tournament.
• Sarah Sivic scored the game-winning goal in the 96th minute to lead the University of Akron women’s soccer team to a 2-1 overtime win over Morehead State at Jayne Stadium in Morehead, Ky. Sivic scored off an assist from Maggie Rusnak for her second goal of the match. Sivic scored an unassisted goal in the 85th minute to tie the score 1-1 after the Eagles scored in the 50th minute. The Zips (2-1) visit Marshall on Sunday for a 1 p.m. kickoff.
• Senior Jessacca Gironda (Archbishop Hoban) scored in the 51st minute off an assist from junior Stephanie Haugh to give the Kent State women’s soccer team a 1-0 win over Cleveland State on Friday at Zoeller Field. The Golden Flashes (2-1-0) had a 21-6 advantage in shots and a 6-2 advantage in shots on goal. Sophomore goalkeeper Stephanie Senn had two saves to record her ninth career shutout and Gironda’s game-winner was her 18th career goal. The Flashes will host Valparaiso at 1 p.m. on Sunday.
Brian Stewart has been named coach of the men’s lacrosse program at the University of Mount Union.
Stewart previously was the coach at the Naval Academy Prep School from 2006-11 and spent the last two seasons as an assistant coach at Limestone College in Gaffney, S.C.
The Summit County Hall of Fame Boxing Association will have its 13th annual Hall of Fame Induction Ceremony on Sept. 8 at 6:30 p.m. at the Cathedral Buffet in Cuyahoga Falls.
