The University of Akron women’s golf team finished the final round of the Mid-American Conference Match Play event with a 4-1 loss to Ohio on Tuesday at the Lakewood Ranch Golf and Country Club in Lakewood Ranch, Fla.
The Zips finished in eighth place in the two-day event, with Frida Fougberg the only Zip to win on the final day.
Fougberg rallied to defeat Angela Codian 3-and-2. Fougberg was down two holes but rallied over the final five holes for the win.
Lina Bengtsson lost 1 up, Laura Murray lost 4 and 3 and Sara Chaves lost 2 up. Sierra Everson rounded out the Zips team with a 5 and 3 loss.
The Zips will travel to Rio Verde, Ariz., for the Rio Verde Invitational on March 7.
Track and field
University of Akron track and field stars Shawn Barber and Kyle Cochrun received Athlete of the Week honors from the MAC after their performances at the Penn State National last week.
Barber earned his third consecutive MAC Field Athlete of the Week award after a record-setting performance. Barber won the individual pole-vault title with a vault of 18-3¼, which shattered the meet (18-2½) and facility (18-3) records.
Cochrun won his second MAC Track Athlete of the Week award in the last month with a school-record time of 14:16.69 in the 5,000-meter run.
Cochrun beat his own school record by 22 seconds and the time is the seventh fastest in the NCAA this season.
The Racers announced the signing of former University of Texas standout Nadia Taylor to a free-agent contract. Taylor was a two-time All-Big 12 selection at Texas.
