The University of Akron baseball team opened Mid-American Conference play on Friday with a 6-3 win over Eastern Michigan at Lee R. Jackson Field in Akron.
Brian Lees had a two-run double, and Kris Simonton had three hits and scored two runs to lead the Zips (8-10, 1-0) over the Eagles (8-9, 0-1).
Brady Stewart, Dom Iero and James Sheltrown each had an RBI, and Devan Ahart and Matt Larocca each had a hit for the Zips.
Starting pitcher John Valek gave up three runs on six hits through 4⅔ innings in the no-decision. Reliever Masashi Sakamoto gave up two hits through 4⅓ innings for his first win of the year.
• The Kent State baseball team began MAC play with a doubleheader split against Toledo on Friday in Kent.
The Golden Flashes (10-9, 1-1) defeated the Rockets (8-11, 1-1) 4-1 in the first game behind three RBI from Cody Koch. Koch had an RBI single in the first inning, and had a two-run double in the third to lead the Flashes.
Starting pitcher Eric Lauer allowed two hits through 5⅓ innings for his fifth win of the season.
The Rockets scored a run in the top of the ninth to rally and defeat the Flashes 5-4 in the second game. Koch hit a two-run homer, and Tommy Monnot hit a two-run double to lead the KSU offense. Reliever Eric Dorsch earned his first loss of the season.
The Kent State softball team lost 6-2 to Kansas and 9-2 to Kentucky in a doubleheader Friday in Lexington, Ky.
Maddy Grimm hit a solo homer and scored a run, and Lauren Kesterson had an RBI groundout to lead the Golden Flashes (12-11) in the first game. Grimm and Kim Kirkpatrick each hit solo homers in the second game for the Flashes.
Olga Shkundina won the No. 1 singles match, and Ksenia Berestetska won the No. 3 singles match, but the University of Akron tennis team lost 5-2 to Toledo on Friday afternoon in Akron.
