The University of Akron men’s basketball team was announced as the favorite in the Mid-American Conference in the 2013-14 MAC preseason poll. The Zips received 18 first-place votes by the 25-member MAC news media panel and 143 overall points.
UA is the defending MAC regular-season and tournament champion, returning two starters and 10 letter winners.
The Zips will begin their season Friday, Nov. 8, when they are hosts to Coastal Carolina.
Kent State University earned a fourth-place finish, receiving one first-place vote and 91 points.
The Golden Flashes return three starters and five letter winners from last year’s team that finished 21-14.
Kent State begins its season at 7 p.m. Nov. 8 against Ohio Northern.

UA captured its first division title last season and returns seniors Hanna Luburgh and Rachel Tecca (Archbishop Hoban).
Tecca, the reigning MAC Player of the Year, and Luburgh, a 2013 All-MAC Tournament team selection, were named to the preseason All-MAC East team.
The Golden Flashes were picked to finish last in the East Division, coming off a disappointing 3-27 season.
UA will open the 2013-14 regular season at 5:30 p.m. Nov. 8, when it plays host to Florida Atlantic.
Kent State will open the regular season at 2 p.m. Nov. 10, when it plays host to Eastern Kentucky.
