The University of Akron men’s basketball team will host a “Purple Out” on Jan. 29 against Ball State as part of the Coaches vs. Cancer Suits and Sneakers Awareness Weekend.
The Purple Out is in support of Dan Peters, the director of basketball operations for the men’s basketball team, who was diagnosed with pancreatic cancer in December.
Peters, also known as “Pete,” has been on a leave of absence from the university to pursue treatment.
Purple shirts with the “4 Pete’s Sake” logo will be distributed to the first 3,000 fans in attendance. Fans are encouraged to wear purple to the game and can also purchase a “4 Pete’s Sake” lapel pin for $5 with all proceeds going to pancreatic cancer research.
Peters joined the UA staff in 2009 after assistant-coaching stints at Cincinnati and Ohio State. Peters was also the head coach at Youngstown State from 1993-99.
University of Akron senior defensive lineman Nico Caponi, sophomore quarterback Kyle Pohl and sophomore kicker Robert Stein were named to the Academic All-Mid-American Conference team Friday. Caponi (3.51 GPA) led the team in sacks with 6.5. Pohl (3.51 GPA) started all 12 games for the Zips and his 18.75 completions per game ranked 39th nationally and second in the MAC. Pohl’s 2,438 passing yards this season were the eighth most in a single season in school history. Stein (3.81 GPA) set a UA record with 51 consecutive extra points this season and was the team’s top scorer.
