UA basketball
scouting report

Who: Western Michigan (8-5, 0-0) at Akron (9-4, 0-0).

When: 7 tonight.

Where: Rhodes Arena.

Radio: WARF (1350-AM), video stream available at the MAC Digital Network online

Notebook: The Broncos are one of the favorites to come out of the Mid-American Conference West Division. The Broncos certainly won’t be a pushover for the Zips in the MAC opener for both teams because they might have a frontcourt capable of giving the Zips problems. Senior forward Nate Hutcheson (12.6 points, 5.5 rebounds) and 6-foot-9 freshman forward Darius Paul (12 points, 6.7 rebounds) played well during the nonconference schedule, along with center Shayne Whittington (11.8 points, 8.2 rebounds) and could test Zips center Zeke Marshall (13.3 points, 6.8 rebounds) and forwards Demetrius Treadwell (10.9 points, 6.3 rebounds) and Nick Harney (9.9 points, 3.8 rebounds). Where the Zips enjoy an advantage is depth, with any member of the reserves capable of providing a lift. It’s important that junior point guard Alex Abreu (9.3 points, 5.8 assists) begin to step things up in the MAC.
