UA golfer advances at U.S. Amateur Championship

At the 113th U.S. Amateur Championship in Brookline, Mass., University of Akron golfer Carr Vernon shot a 3-under 67 on Tuesday to advance to the match play portion of the championship today.

Vernon, a sophomore from Poplar Bluff, Mo., has a 36-hole total of 2-over 142, 12 strokes behind the leaders.

Vernon is one of 64 players that will take to the course today to compete in the Round of 64. He faces Matt Emery of Franklin, Tenn. The winner will move on to the Round of 32, which is set for Thursday morning.

Akron men’s soccer

The University of Akron men’s soccer team opened its first full day of team activities Tuesday and did so ranked as the No. 8 team in the National Soccer Coaches Association of America preseason poll. Defending NCAA champion Indiana is ranked No. 1.

The first of eight two-a-day practices begins today. The season starts the weekend of Aug. 30 at the College of Charleston Tournament. Friday’s intrasquad scrimmage will be free and open to the public starting at 6:30 p.m. at FirstEnergy Stadium - Cub Cadet Field. Marshall visits Akron next Tuesday for a 7 p.m. scrimmage.

MAC women’s soccer

Akron placed two and Kent State placed one on the 2013 College Sports Madness Mid-American Conference Preseason All-Conference Women’s Soccer Team. Kent senior forward Jacyln Dutton and Akron senior defenders Kelly DeNiro and Amber Kern were all named to the first team. Kent junior Stephanie Haugh and Akron sophomore Katie George were named to the MAC preseason second team. Both Kent and Akron open the season on Aug. 23 — Akron at Purdue and Kent hosts St. Bonaventure.
