University of Akron hires new cornerbacks coach

The University of Akron has hired a new cornerbacks coach in Otis Mounds, head coach Terry Bowden announced on Monday.

Mounds played safety for Bowden at Auburn during the 1993 and ’94 seasons before playing professionally in the Canadian Football League and Arena Football League.

His coaching experience includes two years as coach of the secondary at St. Thomas Aquinas High School, two years on the defensive staff at Texas Tech and last season as the defensive backs coach for Holmes Community College.

Golf

• The University of Akron women lost both matches on day one of the Mid-American Conference Match Play event.

The No. 3 Zips fell 3-2 to No. 6 Western Michigan and 3-2 to No. 8 Cleveland State.

Laura Murray won both her matches for the Zips by scores of 4 and 2.

• The World Golf Championships — Bridgestone Invitational is hosting a volunteer open house/registration for the 2014 tournament on Feb. 20 from 5-7 p.m. at the Tournament Media Center, 440 Warner Road in Akron.
