The University of Akron women’s basketball team extended its winning streak to a school-record nine games with a 89-75 victory Wednesday over Northern Illinois at Rhodes Arena.
The Zips (18-6, 10-3 Mid-American Conference) got out to a 48-30 first-half lead against the Huskies, thanks to an 18-point, six-rebound, three-assist first half from senior forward Rachel Tecca (Hoban) and 11 points from Hanna Luburgh.
Tecca finished with a game-high 36 points. Luburgh finished with 17 points and 10 assists.
Carly Young added 10 points off the bench.
Although the Huskies (8-15, 4-9) shot a better field-goal percentage than the Zips (53.6-49.3), the Zips kept possessions alive with 14 offensive rebounds and turned the ball over just seven times to the Huskies’ 11.
The Zips won eight consecutive games in the 1980-81 and 1995-96 seasons.
