The University of Akron women played league-leading Bowling Green even in the first half and hung around until the end before falling short in a 60-55 Mid-American Conference loss on Saturday at Rhodes Arena.
The Falcons (22-4, 12-1) did not seal the victory until Akron’s Ti’esha Stubbs misfired on a 3-pointer that would have tied the score with five seconds to go.
Two free throws in the final seconds provided the final margin of victory.
Kacie Cassell led UA (12-15, 6-7) with 15 points, 13 in the first half.
Sina King added 11 points and Hanna Luburgh grabbed a career-high 11 rebounds for the Zips.
The Falcons were led by Jessica Slagle with 15 points and DanielleHavel, who had 10 points and eight rebounds.
Akron led by as many as seven points in the first half and led 28-22 with 2:32 to go in the first half before Bowling Green closed the half on a 6-0 run.
Bowling Green took control with an 11-6 run to start the second half and Akron never led again, cutting the lead to one once and to two several times.
