The University of Akron women never stopped chasing, but the Zips (9-14, 3-6) couldn’t catch up to Toledo (14-7, 7-2), and the host Rockets sprinted away in the final minutes for a 71-60 Mid-American Conference win Wednesday night.
The Zips trailed 35-23 at halftime but guard Sina King initiated a charge with nine points in six minutes.
With 3:39 remaining, a Hanna Luburgh layup cut the Zips’ deficit to 62-57. But UA couldn’t finish off the comeback and Toledo pulled away as time ran out.
King led UA with a career-high 22 points on 10-of-13 shooting to go along with 13 rebounds.
Guard Taylor Ruper drilled four 3-pointers to finish the night with 12 points.
As a team, UA shot 39.7 percent from the field and 29.2 percent from 3-point range.
Guard Courtney Ingersoll led Toledo with a game-high 23 points on 9-of-13 shooting.
She also grabbed six rebounds and had three assists.
