After tying the school record for wins with 26 and setting the nation’s longest winning streak at 19, the University of Akron men’s basketball team surpassed last year’s number of total season tickets and now has the largest season ticket base in program history.
The Zips surpassed the 1,097 season tickets sold last year.
The 2013-14 season begins in 36 days with a home game against Coastal Carolina.
The University of Akron is 10 strokes back from the lead and in fifth place after one round at the Firestone Invitational at the Firestone Country Club North Course.
Sophomore Carr Vernon leads the Zips with a 36-hole 2-under 142, good for fourth place individually. Senior Charlie Bull is sixth at 1-under 143.
• The University of Akron sits seventh in a field of 16 after a wet and windy opening round to the 2013 Mid-American Conference Preview at Hawthorns Golf & Country Club.
Freshman Lina Bengtsson led the Zips with a 7-over 79 and is tied for 11th.
• Kent State University concluded its season with a seventh-place finish at the Schooner Fall Classic.
Taylor Kim led the Golden Flashes, placing third overall with a 1-under 209.
Track and field
Reggie Ray, a native of Norton (Wadsworth High School) and graduate of the College of Wooster in 2000, was inducted into the Wooster “W” Association Hall of Fame.
Ray still holds North Coast Athletic Conference records in the 100-meter (10.65) and 200 (21.41) and was an All-American three times in track.
