Zips beat Furman 1-0, earn first place in tournament

A second-half goal from Reinaldo Brenes clinched a 1-0 victory for the No. 8 nationally ranked Akron Zips over Furman in the Nike/Aaron Olitsky Memorial Classic Tournament. The Zips (2-0), who defeated tournament host College of Charleston on Friday, sealed first place in the four-team tournament.

Brenes’ goal came in the 58th minute when substitute Ismail Seremba fed a through-ball to the striker, who slotted past the Furman keeper. The goal was the first of the season for the Hermann Trophy candidate.

Fernando Pina earned his second win and shutout of the season, posting one save.

Defender Bryan Gallego was named Tournament MVP and joined Brenes, Aodhan Quinn and Eric Stevenson on the All-Tournament Team.

Women’s soccer

The University of Akron played Marshall University to a 1-1 tie Sunday afternoon in Akron’s second straight overtime match in Huntington, W.Va.

Sophomore goalie Klaire Adee stopped a career-high eight shots against Marshall and has made 14 saves this season.

Lani Smith, a junior transfer from South Carolina, scored the tying goal with just 20 minutes to go.

• Archbishop Hoban graduate Jessacca Gironda scored the winning goal in overtime to lead the Kent State Golden Flashes (3-1) to a 1-0 victory over visiting Valparaiso.

Sophomore Madison Helterbran blasted a shot off the post and the ball fell to Gironda, who tapped home her second goal of the season. Helterbran was robbed of a goal earlier when she beat the Valpo goaltender, but a defender was just able to clear the ball off the line.

Field hockey

Kent State earned its first win of the season as the Golden Flashes beat Appalachian State 6-2 in Harrisonburg, Va. Jenna McHale opened the scoring at the 27:47 mark off a corner; Rebecca Lee doubled the lead just before halftime.Alyssa McFerren, Melanie Kahn, Alexis Madeira and Shannon Martin also scored.
