The University of Akron rifle team traveled to West Virginia this month to compete against the No. 1 nationally ranked Mountaineers and No. 15 ranked Mississippi State University.
Despite finishing in third place, Akron recorded a final score of 4,605, which included a program record 2,288 small-bore score.
Seniors Victoria Brown and Tim Hopkins led the Zips in small-bore competition with tied scores of 581 points — also a program record.
Matt Chezem (572), Zachary Strohl (571), Elizabeth Berlin (564) and Crystal Reynolds (562) rounded out the record-setting squad.
In the air rifle portion of the competition, Strohl and Brown led the Zips with scores of 584. In total, the air rifle team contributed 2,317 points.
Akron was to host the Zippy Open Nov. 8-10 and Nov. 15-17.
Kent State University fell to No. 8 nationally ranked Virginia Tech University via a tiebreaker on Sunday afternoon.
The Golden Flashes split ten matches with the Hokies, resulting in an 18-18 tie. Virginia Tech, however, was awarded an extra point because of an NCAA tiebreaker.
Sophomore 184-pounder Sam Wheeler went 3-0 on Sunday to lead the Flashes.
Sophomore 133-pounder Mack McGuire, sophomore 157-pounder Ian Miller, junior 174-pounder Caleb Marsh and sophomore Cole Baxter all went 2-1.
Kent returns to action on Saturday when it competes in the Eastern Michigan Open.
