Love him or hate him, director Oliver Stone is seldom boring. As part of Kent State’s May 4 Commemoration, Stone, a Vietnam era U.S. Army Infantry veteran who was awarded a Bronze Star of Valor, will speak on “History and Memory in Film” drawing from his own catalog of films about the 1960s.
2) Jillian Michaels’ Maximize Your Life Tour, 7 p.m., Saturday, State Theatre at PlayhouseSquare, 1519 Euclid Ave., Cleveland. $35-$149. www.playhousesquare.org, 216-241-6000 or the PlayhouseSquare ticket office.
I've never watched an entire episode of “The Biggest Loser,” but the show’s star Michaels, a health and wellness fitness coach, has become quite a cottage industry yelling, shaming and eventually encouraging overweight folks to be less overweight. I gotta wonder what kind of personal attention you get for that $149 ticket, a two-minute, personalized berating?
3)The Laughing Club of Northeast Ohio will celebrate World Laughing Day at 1 p.m. Sunday at Hardesty Park, North Hawkins and West Market streets in Akron. A laughing circle will be formed at the shelter house.
What the world needs now, is laughs, sweet laughs. There's a day for everything isn't there? Come get your hearty chuckle and/or full-bodied guffaw on in the “laughing circle” with a bunch of other folks in West Akron.
4)Smokie Norful, 6:15 p.m., Friday, House of the Lord, 1650 Diagonal Road, $35, 330-836-7182
Besides having a cool name, Norful has been a popular contemporary gospel singer/pianist for a decade. His most recent album is 2012's “Once in a Lifetime” and the show also doubles as a benefit for the House of the Lord's Emmanuel Christian Academy's scholarship programs.
5)Summit Choral Society’s Masterworks Chorale present Handel’s Messiah, 7:30 p.m., Saturday and 3:30 p.m., Sunday, EJ Thomas Performing Arts Hall, 198 Hill St., University of Akron, $15, $20, $25, www.ejthomashall.com, (330) 972.7570.
Handel's “Messiah” is one of the bigger hits of the classical/choral world but is seldom performed in its two-plus hour entirety. Well, the SCSMC has apparently decided to go full hardcore on the biblical themed musical beast and will perform the entire piece not once, but twice!
