Newark, OH, June 15, 2013: The Grand Lodge of Ohio, Sons of Italy in America awarded Akron Police Captain Paul Calvaruso, the State of Ohio 2013 Law Officer of The Year award. The award was presented at the evening Gala event at the Cherry Valley Lodge in Newark, Ohio. The Gala was held during The Sons of Italy biennial state convention.
Captain Calvaruso is a 28-year veteran of the Akron Police Department. He is currently a Captain in the Uniform Sub-Division. He advanced through the ranks to his current position where oversees five patrol shifts and approximately 200 officers and supervisors. He was raised the North Hill area of Akron, known as “Little Italy”. He graduated from Archbishop Hoban High School, and attended the University of Akron where he received a degree in Accounting. He is the son of an immigrant and has embraced the Italian culture and serves as an excellent example of an outstanding Italian-American Law Enforcement Officer. He is a graduate of the Law Enforcement Foundation’s Police Executive Leadership College, Certified Law Enforcement Executive Program and Leadership Akron Class XXI. He also successfully completed the FBI National Academy.
Terry Latavo, President of the Sons of Italy Grand Lodge of Ohio, presented Captain Calvaruso the award. Tomasina Elavsky and Captain Dan Zampelli nominated him for the award. Mrs. Elavski is a Trustee for the Sons of Italy, Akron Lodge. Captain Zampelli is an also an officer in the Akron Police Department. He is a member of the Akron Lodge and a former recipient of the Law Officer of the Year Award.
