College of Wooster Sophomore James May Receives Fulbright Summer Institute Grant

UPublish story by John Finn

WOOSTER, Ohio — James May, a rising sophomore at The College of Wooster, has been awarded a grant through the Fulbright Summer Institute to study at Queen’s University in Belfast, Northern Ireland.

During his four weeks abroad, May will be involved in Queen’s University’s Irish Studies program, through which he will learn about the political, economic, and social history of Northern Ireland in relation to the UK and the international community.

May is a music and English double major with a mathematics minor at Wooster, where he is also a peer math tutor, and a member of the peer mediation group Students Helping Students, as well as the Wooster Chorus, the Irish Dance Team, and the Quidditch Team.

“I’ve never had an opportunity to go abroad before, so to have the chance to go to Belfast is incredible,” said May. “I’m so grateful to the Fulbright program for providing this opportunity and encouraging this degree of communal education.”

Established by treaty in 1948, the US-UK Fulbright Commission is the only bi-lateral, transatlantic scholarship program offering awards and summer programs for study or research in any field at any accredited US or UK University. The Commission is part of the Fulbright program, which was conceived in the aftermath of World War II to promote leadership, learning, and empathy between nations through educational exchange. Award recipients and summer program participants receive guidance and instruction to help them become the leaders of tomorrow and support the “special relationship” between the US and UK.
