WOOSTER, Ohio — Christina Solazzo, a first-year student at The College of Wooster and a resident of Clearwater, Fla., has received one of National Hospice and Palliative Care’s highest honors for volunteer service.
Solazzo, who worked in multiple areas with Suncoast Hospice throughout high school and won the 2013 Suncoast Hospice Volunteer of the Year award for exemplary service last spring, was chosen for the “Volunteers are the Foundation of Hospice Award” for outstanding teen service earlier this fall. The award is presented to those volunteers who “best reflect the universal concept of volunteerism in its truest sense – serving as an inspiration to others.”
In addition to providing comfort and companionship for patients at the Suncoast Hospice Care Centers and local nursing homes, Solazzo was also involved in fundraising, special events, community outreach, and support in the office. In addition, she was a positive role model to other teen volunteers, who followed her example of thoughtfulness and compassion to patients.
“This award is a wonderful honor for Christina and Suncoast Hospice,” said Rafael J. Sciullo, president and CEO of Suncoast Hospice. “We’re so proud and appreciative of the compassionate, committed service she provided to our patients and families. We wish her many blessings in her future.”
J. Donald Schumacher, NHPCO president and CEO, said, “Each and every hospice volunteer deserves recognition and the highest of accolades, but the volunteers we’re recognizing truly demonstrate an outstanding level of commitment and passion. The service of volunteers in every aspect of hospice and palliative care is truly a gift of caring that makes a world of difference to patients, families, and the organizations they serve.”
