Former Liberian Presidential Candidate to Speak at The College of Wooster on April 23

WOOSTER, Ohio — George Klay Kieh, professor in the Department of Political Science and Planning at the University of Georgia and a former New Deal Movement Party candidate for president in Liberia (2005), will present "Travails of the Third Wave of Democratization in Africa," at the Africana Studies Seminar on Tuesday, April 23, at The College of Wooster. His talk, which is free and open to the public, will be held in Room 120 of Lowry Center (1189 Beall Ave.) at 11 a.m.

A graduate of the University of Liberia, Kieh came to the United States and earned a graduate certification in African Studies as well as a master’s and doctorate in political science from Northwestern University. He is an expert on a range of topics, including security studies, peace and conflict studies, American Foreign Policy, democratization, development, political economy, regional organizations, and global organizations like the United Nations.

Kieh has taught courses on international conflict and conflict resolution, civil conflict, genocide, human rights, international law, international political economy, African Politics and a variety of others. His publications include Liberia’s First Civil War: The Crises of Underdevelopment and Stakes in Africa-United States Relations: Proposals for Equitable Partnership. He has also received a number of honors and awards, including The Topps Scholar of the Decade Award in 2012. In addition, he has received a number of fellowships and research/teaching grants, and he has been a frequent panelist at forums around the world.
