UPublish story by Sherry Swisher

Join the Friends of Green Branch Library for a documentary program on the life of John R. Buchtel, a Gilded Age industrialist and philanthropist. The program will occur at the Central Administration Building, 1755 Town Park Blvd. in Green, on Saturday, June 1 at 10 am. Immediately following the program, a Memorial Service and Dedication of an Ohio Historical Marker in Mr. Buchtel’s memory will be held at the Green Branch Library. Refreshments will follow the dedication. Please register for both events in advance by calling the Green Branch Library at 330-896-9074.

Mr. Buchtel was born January 18, 1820 in Green Township. This former farm boy represented the epitome of the self-made man; Mr. Buchtel literally went from rags to riches. Through his benevolence, he created a legacy that continues to expand through present time. John R. Buchtel is best known for founding Buchtel College, but was also active in establishing the public library in Summit County. In fact, he was the first chairman of the board.
