Local Musicians Wanted for Upcoming Akron Pops Orchestra Season

UPublish story by Crystal Brodzenski

AKRON, OHIO – The Akron Pops Orchestra is seeking volunteer musicians for their upcoming concert season. The new season begins with rehearsals on September 5th at 7:30pm at the Quirk Cultural Center in Cuyahoga Falls. Current members of the orchestra are excited to give back to the community and begin the 87th season of music. Local musicians who are interested in joining the orchestra are encouraged to sit in on a rehearsal.

The Akron Pops Orchestra is comprised of musicians that have varying musical backgrounds who volunteer their time to perform in the community. The type of instruments that are featured are typically found in a symphony orchestra. However, rather than being solely a classical group, the orchestra performs a wide repertoire of music including: Broadway show tunes, operettas, marches, popular and time-honored songs, light classical pieces, and movie themes.

“At this time we are especially in need of a pianist,” said Rebecca Yoho, Akron Pops board member. “We could use another trombone player and assistance in the percussion section.  Those that play string instruments are always being recruited!”

The Akron Pops have a full calendar of concerts throughout 2014. Venues include; Metro Parks, the Quirk Cultural Center, and local libraries, as well as numerous nursing homes throughout the area. The group has been performing free, engaging concerts since 1926 and they continue to be a well-respected name throughout the Akron area.

Individuals interested in joining the Akron Pops Orchestra or those interested in obtaining more information are invited to visit www.akronpops.org or www.facebook.com/AkronPops.

About Akron Pops Orchestra

In 1926, a group of physicians and musicians formed what became known as the Akron Doctor's Orchestra so they could share their musical talent with the community. Since that time, musicians from all walks of life have joined the group, diversifying its membership. To reflect that diversity, in 1986 the Orchestra's name was changed to the Akron 'POPS' Orchestra – a name that continues to be well-respected throughout the Greater Akron area.

The orchestra is comprised of 40-50 dedicated musicians representing varying levels of musical expertise. Each member VOLUNTEERS his or her talent, time, and resources to play with the Pops. Members are quick to share that the reward is seeing a smile or a joyful tear on the face of an audience member, or receiving a hug and a "thank you" from a grateful listener.

The Akron Pops welcome any musician who would like to share the gift of music with the community!
