Gretchen Pleuss-- a local singer-songwriter and recent University of Akron graduate--is attempting to win $25,000 in the 3rd Guitar Center's Singer-Songwriter Competition for the Akron-based nonprofit "The Karen Community of Akron Inc. (KCA)."
KCA is a new 501c3 charity operated by Karen refugees in Akron for Karen refugees in Akron. KCA provides services such as English language tutoring, interpretation, employment services, caseworkers, and counselors to the Karen refugees in Akron. Last year as the University of Akron's Department of Anthropology Research Assistant, Gretchen was attempting to help KCA acquire funding.
The Karen are a displaced ethnic group from the country of Myanmar (also referred to as Burma). The Karen have experienced incomprehensible oppression from Myanmar's militaristic government-- many Karen have fled and continue to flee to refugee camps in Thailand. Since the United States opened its doors to Myanmar refugees a few years ago, Akron is now home to approximately 500 Karen and counting.
In order to be chosen as a finalist in the competition, Gretchen's Guitar Center webpage must show considerable activity within a week's time. "Activity" constitutes as visiting the page and watching any of the videos posted. The link to Gretchen's Guitar Center webpage is here: http://songwriter.revimage.com/channels/Gretchen+Pleuss
If anyone would like more information about KCA or is interested in being a donor/sponsor, please feel free to contact Gretchen at email@example.com or 330-988-0485
