Medina County Community Fund awards $27,000 to local nonprofits

MEDINA, Ohio (June 24, 2013) –The Medina County Community Fund, a permanent philanthropic endowment of Akron Community Foundation, issued 14 grants totaling $27,000 to qualified 501(c)(3) nonprofit organizations that improve the lives of all Medina County residents.

Since its inception in 1993, the fund has awarded 163 grants totaling $405,558 to organizations with programs benefiting Medina County residents.

One of the grants awarded this year is for Cornerstone of Hope to provide grief care services to residents. Cornerstone of Hope is an organization dedicated to providing support, education and hope for grieving individuals and families, particularly those who have lost a loved one suddenly.

“Grief is something that, at some point in time, touches everyone in our community,” said Tim Hagerty, executive director of the Medina County Community Fund. “Cornerstone of Hope is such a great resource for residents from all walks of life and I’m glad that we can help bring this program to them.”

Other grants this year will continue free music programs, provide life skills training to people with disabilities, and provide employment and volunteer services to mentally ill adults.

The following nonprofit organizations received grants:

Alternative Paths Inc., for educational materials that aim to prevent suicide and encourage intervention, $2,000

Bobby Tripodi Foundation dba Cornerstone of Hope, for grief care services in Medina County, $2,000

Brunswick Educational Fund, for the Brunswick Schools Video Program, in which student “backpack journalists” create print, web and video stories about community initiatives for broadcast by Northeast Ohio media outlets, $3,500

Cornerstone Wellness Center Inc., for Recipes for LIFE, a program to engage at-risk youth in social skills, life skill practice and drug prevention, $1,500

Easter Seal Society of Northeast Ohio, to provide testing, therapy and educational materials for a speech and language program, $1,000

Feeding Medina County, for a collaboration with the Medina County Juvenile Courts that teaches troubled teens to plant and grow fresh produce for distribution to needy residents, $1,000

Kidney Foundation of Medina County Inc., for renal patient services, $1,500

Medina County Arts Council Inc., to support free concerts by Medina County performers, $1,000

Medina Creative Housing Inc., for a therapeutic horseback riding program for children with disabilities, $2,500

Newbridge Place, for an employment and volunteer program for mentally ill adults in Medina County, $3,000

Oasis of Hope Pregnancy & Parenting Support Center, to purchase a phone system, computers and software to assist clients, $4,000

Ohio Regional Music Arts Cultural Outreach, for the 3rd annual Jazz Under the Stars concert series, $1,500

St. Matthew Evangelical Lutheran Church, to make energy efficiency improvements to transitional housing, $1,500

Young Life Greater Akron, for a youth development program for young adults with disabilities, $1,000
