REM Ohio Offers More Employment and Training Options for Adults

UPublish story by Crystal Brodzenski

AKRON, OHIO – REM Ohio announced today that they will be holding an open house at their new Opportunities Center, located at 3333 Manchester Road, Suite 11 & 12, on Friday, October 12th from 12:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. This open house will showcase the vocational curriculum for adults with intellectual and developmental disabilities (I/DD) in addition to featuring the newest innovative vocational rehabilitation program “Ready2Work.” Everyone in the community is welcome and encouraged to attend this celebration, obtain more information on services available, and sign up for training and education on the road that leads towards employment.

The vocational track at the Opportunities Center offers a variety of education, hands on training, and work experience in small focus groups. The objective and goals are aligned to assist participants in acquiring needed vocational skills and hands on training often needed in the pursuit of community employment. In addition small work crews, often self-proclaimed as “The Crew”, provide work experience and a paycheck. The crews often complete a number of on-site and off-site jobs. Each week, participants invest time and effort to improve work-related skills via classroom instruction, demonstration opportunities, seminar or clinic focused sessions, and other employment preparation focused activities.

The Opportunities Center features a woodworking shop, drop-off laundry services, and off-site cleaning and janitorial services. Residences and businesses in the area are always welcome to inquire about rates and estimates for these services.

In addition, REM Ohio’s Ready2Work program assists adults whom may be experiencing barriers to obtaining traditional employment. This work group may be comprised of persons, such as mature workers, returning veterans, displaced workers entering new industries, or workers with various mental or physical disabilities. The goal of the Ready2Work program is to find meaningful work that matches applicants’ interests, obtain employment, and help them live life to the fullest. Our job developers carefully match each applicant with an employer in their home community where they can make a positive contribution and pursue their career goals. After the person begins work, we often help monitor their progress on the jobsite to assure master their new responsibilities and also ensure a good fit for both the applicant and the employer.
