Akron, Ohio – It’s a Tuesday afternoon at First Glance in the Kenmore Community of Akron. Inside the organization, you’ll find a group of middle and high school girls lounging on comfortable black chairs, discussing ways to respect their peers. You can also hear the clanking of a puck being hit back and forth on the air hockey table as a high school guy bonds with a local volunteer mentor. On Tuesdays, First Glance hosts six different programs, and the students value this time because at First Glance, they are valued.
In 2013, First Glance Student Center was privileged to not only apply for but also to receive a grant award from the Ronald McDonald House Charities of Northeast Ohio (RMHC-NEO) in partnership with local franchise owner John Blickle. This award, totaling $9,497.95, allowed for new furnishings and equipment to be purchased for First Glance’s recreational areas.
Both Kenmore High School and Innes Community Learning Center have a 100% economically disadvantaged student base, and these are the students who come to First Glance. Without the help of the RMHC-NEO, many of the students would never have been privileged to use quality, undamaged furniture or brand new sporting equipment. Both First Glance and the students are incredibly grateful for the support of the RMHC-NEO.
RMHC-NEO seeks to improve the quality of life of the children and families through awarding grants to not-for-profits in the Northeast Ohio area. The organization is itself a non-profit that partners with local McDonald’s franchisees to fund these grants.
First Glance Student Center, Inc. is a youth center in the Kenmore Community of Akron that hosts eleven programs, each designed to meet a need among the children, youth, or young adults of the community with the ultimate goal of connecting these students and their communities to Christ and the church through real, loving, and non-threatening avenues.
