UPublish story by John Finn

WOOSTER, Ohio — Michael Wesch, associate professor of cultural anthropology and digital ethnography and Coffman Chair for University Distinguished Teaching Scholars at Kansas State University, will present “The End of Wonder in the Age of Whatever” at the annual Stieglitz Memorial Lecture on Monday, April 21, at The College of Wooster. The lecture, which is free and open to the public, will be held in Lean Lecture Room of Wishart Hall (303 E. University St.) beginning at 7:30 p.m.

Wesch, who was named U.S. Professor of the Year for Doctoral and Research Universities in 2008, was described as “the explainer” by Wired magazine for his work in exploring and analyzing the effects of social media and digital technology on global society. The videos he created about culture, technology, education, and information have been viewed more than 20 million times and translated in more than 20 languages. They have also been featured at international film festivals and major academic conferences around the world. His work has been recognized through a variety of awards and honors, including a Wired Magazine Rave Award and the John Culkin Award for Outstanding Praxis in Media Ecology, as well his selection as an Emerging Explorer by National Geographic.

The Stieglitz Memorial Lecture was founded by Dr. and Mrs. Lewis N. Stieglitz of Concord, N.H., as a tribute to their son, Martin, a Wooster student who was majoring in sociology when he lost his life in an off-campus house fire on Feb. 11, 1989. The Department of Sociology and Anthropology sponsors the lecture series, which brings a well-known social scientist to campus each academic year to deliver a public presentation and to visit classes.
Also providing support for the lecture is the Mellon Foundation.

Additional information about the lecture is available by phone (330-263-2576) or e-mail (
