The highly acclaimed AronBerkner Duo, featuring guitarist Stephen Aron and flutist Jane Berkner, will present a free public concert at The College of Wooster on Sunday, Oct. 21. The performance, which begins at 7:30 p.m., will be held in Gault Recital Hall of Scheide Music Center (525 E. University St.).
With a repertoire that spans the flute/guitar masterworks and spotlights several works written especially for them, the duo will offer a program that includes music by South American composers Sergio Assad, Ricardo Iznaola, Jose Lezcano, and Marco Granados, and Italian composers Vincenzo Sorrentino and Mario Castelnuovo-Tedesco.
Aron and Berkner are noted for their irresistible rhythms and romantic melodies with the popular, folkloric and jazzy roots of Latin American music. Their instruments, especially the guitar, use special techniques to convey rhythms and grooves, including numerous unique strumming styles and percussive effects.
Aron, a teacher of guitar and founder of the classical guitar studies program at the Oberlin Conservatory of Music, performs regularly throughout the United States, Canada, and Europe. An avid arranger, his works have been published by Tuscany Editions, Mel Bay Publications, and Clear Note Publications. Aron’s recordings have been described as “stunning” (Guitar Review), “superbly produced” (Soundboard), “warmly recommended” (Fanfare), and “inspired” (Classical Guitar). His recordings and publications of 30 Lieder ohne Worte by Felix Mendelssohn and the complete Chopin Mazurkas, both for solo guitar, were industry firsts. He has adjudicated numerous national and international competitions and has given performances, lectures, and master classes at Guitar Foundation of America Conventions, Stetson Guitar Workshops, Eastman Guitar Festivals, Rantucci Guitar Festivals, Alexandria Guitar Festivals, the National Summer Guitar Workshops, and the Yale Guitar Extravaganza, among others.
Berkner, a senior lecturer of flute at the University of Akron and a member of the music faculty at Ashland University, has been delighting audiences with creative and diverse programs for more than 20 years. She has been on the Ohio Touring Artist's roster since 1992, performing in recital series and school concerts across the state. She has performed with the Akron, Ashland, Canton, and Youngstown Symphonies, the Ohio Ballet Orchestra, O’Neil Chamber Players, Garth Newel Chamber Players, and the Chamber Music Society of Ohio. In addition, she has played for touring shows at EJ Thomas Hall in Akron, Playhouse Square in Cleveland, and the Porthouse Theater as well as the Botzum Summer Festival Orchestra, Singers Company, Summit Choral Society, Akron Lyric Opera Orchestra, and Prism Projects in New York City. She released a CD with pianist Kim Bakkum, titled “In Cynthia’s Garden”, which ClevelandClassical.com described as “wonderfully charming…and magnificently performed.”
