Oscar-nominated Documentary about Military Sexual Assault Will Show at the Akron Library

AKRON, OHIO (July 25, 2013) – Pedal For Heroes USA, Red Bird Trauma Recovery Center and the Rape and Crisis Center of Summit and Medina Counties will offer a free screening of the film, THE INVISIBLE WAR. A 2012 documentary, THE INVISIBLE WAR depicts sexual assault in the United States military.

The free film will be screening in the auditorium of the Akron Library on High Street, on Wednesday, August 28 from 6:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. The panel, moderated by Sherri Bevan Walsh, the Summit County Prosecutor, includes: two survivors of military sexual trauma, Patrick A. Palmieri, Ph.D. and Director of the Center for the Treatment and Study of Traumatic Stress Summa Health System; Dana Zedak, Director of the Rape Crisis Center of Medina and Summit Counties; and Shianne Eagleheart, native healer who is also a licensed counselor from The Red Bird Trauma Recovery Center.

“As citizens of this country, I feel it is our duty to serve our veterans. We have historically underserved them,” said Cassie Schumacher, co-founder of Pedal For Heroes USA. “THE INVISIBLE WAR exposes a truth that’s been hidden and we need to stand with the survivors. We’d like to invite the public to this free showing and panel discussion.”

Meticulously researched, the film reveals that hundreds of thousands of service members have been assaulted over the past several decades, with nearly half of those assaulted being male. Combining interviews with high-ranking military officials and members of Congress with the devastating testimony of veterans, the film catalogues the conditions that have protected perpetrators and allowed this epidemic to continue.

Both a comprehensive inquiry and an insight into what can be done to bring about much-needed change, THE INVISIBLE WAR urges us all, civilian and military alike, to fight for a system that protects our men and women in uniform.

THE INVISIBLE WAR compiles first person testimonies of their experience with sexual assault in the military. It includes accounts from veterans, journalists, mental health professionals, active duty and retired generals, Department of Defense Officials, and members of the military justice system. The documentary illustrates victims’ struggles and highlights the lack of justice, sympathy and mental and physical care for them.

The film calls for changes to the means in which the military handles sexual assaults and encourage more victims to come forward and report their abuse. Counselors will be available at the event.
