Volunteer Opportunities, For the Week of November 26, 2012

The United Way of Summit County Volunteer Center recruits and refers volunteers to area non-profit organizations and other organizations required to incorporate volunteer programs for accreditation status. The following organizations need volunteers. ACCESS, Inc.: We are looking for individuals or groups to adopt our families for Christmas. Mothers will provide a wish list of items for their children. Generous sponsors will shop for Christmas presents that will be given to the families before Christmas.

Akron Urban League: Seeking volunteers to assist with our annual Dining with Santa event on December 12. Children ages 5-12 come out to have breakfast with Santa, take a picture with Santa, participate in various fun holiday activities, and receive an age and gender appropriate gift.

American Red Cross of Summit and Portage Counties: Individuals and groups are needed to write Holiday letters to our military serving home and abroad from 3 - 6 p.m. on November 29.

Battered Women’s Shelter: Families who are living in any of the shelter programs or families who have recently left their abusive home environments are eligible to be “adopted” during the holidays. BWS will provide you with first names, sizes and gift ideas. This is a confidential program, you will NOT be able to meet your family. (this is out of respect for the families in difficult life positions).

Boys & Girls Clubs of the Western Reserve: Volunteers needed to wrap gifts in preparation for our Holiday for Kids event from 12p.m.-2p.m. December 6, 2012! Minimum age: 16, 14 with adult supervision.

Cascade Locks Park Association: Seeking volunteers on December 19, 20 and 21 from 10 a.m. – 2 assist with wrapping gifts for people at the Mustill Store. We supply all the paper, ribbon, name tags, etc. It's low key and a lot of fun, hope you'll join us.

Child Guidance & Family Solutions: Seeking volunteers to Adopt-a-Family for the holiday. If you, your company or group would like to help a family for the Holidays, we will provide you with first names of all family members, ages, gender, sizes and any specific needs or wants. We ask that you purchase gifts for each family member, wrap them with their name on the package and deliver them to the agency by December 18th.

Community Support Services, Inc.: Volunteers needed to assist with holiday bagging of approximately 1500 bags for clients of the organization.

Conservancy for Cuyahoga Valley National Park: Volunteers needed weekend afternoons from through Sunday December 23 to be an elf that assists with Holiday programs, gift wrapping, photography, and greeting visitors.

Freedom House for Women: Seeking volunteer individuals, families, or groups to adopt-a-family(s) for the holiday. Volunteers will be provided a "wish list" for the family(s). Gifts should be delivered to agency by December 19.

Hale Farm and Village, Western Reserve Historical Society: Seeking volunteer Greeters and Costumed role players to assist with the Holiday Lantern Tour December 1, 7, 8, 14-16, 19-23. Minimum age: 16, 14 with adult supervision.

Hospice of Visiting Nurse Services and Affiliates: We welcome musicians, singing groups and carolers to provide soft holiday music to entertain our patients and families throughout the holiday. Minimum age: 16.

Mental Health America of Summit County: Seeking volunteer individuals, groups, or families to Adopt-a-Family for the holidays. We have 5 families in need this season. Specific information regarding sizes and gift ideas will be provided to the “Adopting” individual/family/group. Items should be wrapped and labeled and delivered to Mental Health America of Summit County by December 10.

National Multiple Sclerosis Society Ohio Buckeye Chapter: We invite you, as well as your family and friends, to join us in spreading some Holiday cheer this December. We are once again preparing for our annual Holiday program, Candy's Compassionate Companions, which provides small gifts and more importantly visits to individuals with MS, who are socially isolated, going through tough times, or who are residents of nursing homes. Volunteers are vital to the success of this program as we will again be visiting over 600 people with MS. Minimum age: 18.

Project GRAD Akron Ohio: Volunteers needed to work with young children creating Holiday crafts that have an educational foundation. The craft activities will be simple and all materials will be supplied. Event is from 9 a.m. -12 p.m. and set up starts at 7:30 a.m. on December 1. Minimum age: 16.

Rockynol Retirement Community: Volunteers needed to make greeting cards to be given to residents on their birthdays and holidays. Volunteer should be knowledgeable in scrapbooking and card making. Volunteers can complete this project in their own homes and supplies can be made available. Minimum age: 13, 8 with adult supervision.

Salvation Army Summit County: As a volunteer during the interviewing process you will be assisting families with registering for the Christmas assistance they will receive through the community supported Salvation Army Christmas Distribution. Minimum age: 18.

South Street Ministries: Adopt a Child for the Holidays. Provide two gifts for a child living in the Summit Lake neighborhood. Instructions and gift ideas will be provided to donor.

Summa's Palliative Care & Hospice Services: Volunteers needed to prepare side dishes and/or serve to patients and families on the Acute Palliative Care Unit (Hospice) at Akron City Hospital on Thanksgiving day from 11 a.m. - 2:30 p.m. Minimum age: 18.

Summit County Children Services: Imagine being in need, but wanting to provide a happy Holiday morning for the children in your care. Summit County Children Services' clients who are recommended by their social workers can select new, donated toys from an entire Holiday Toy Room, thanks to the generosity of community donors like you. Our social work staff recommends grandparents and other caregivers who need assistance at the Holidays, and donors provide new, reasonably priced toys which we will display in our Holiday Toy Room. Summit County Historical Society: Come enjoy the Lock 3 area during the holidays by volunteering with the Akron History Exhibit. As an Akron History Exhibit volunteer you will welcome visitors to the museum, direct them to the different exhibits and share your holiday spirit. Volunteering with us puts you in the middle of all that is happening in downtown Akron during the holiday Season! Minimum age: 16, 12 with adult supervision.
