Volunteer Opportunities, For the Week of October 21, 2012

The United Way of Summit County Volunteer Center recruits and refers volunteers to area non-profit organizations and other organizations required to incorporate volunteer programs for accreditation status. The following organizations need volunteers. ACCESS, Inc.: Volunteers needed to provide supervision for homeless children of all ages residing at Shelter. This opportunity is for volunteers who have a flexible schedule. This may include weekday hours, evenings and/or weekends. Minimum age: 16.

Akron Summit Community Action: Volunteers needed between the hours of

8 a.m. – 5 p.m. weekdays to assist with Head Start classroom activities. Minimum age: 18.

Alliance for a Healthy Youth: Seeking Board Members. Volunteers board members will interview with executive director, attend board orientation, agree with mission of Alliance for Healthy Youth, adhere to board responsibilities, job description, conflict of interest policy, and attend board meeting on 4th Tuesday of the month from 4:30 p.m. -6:00 p.m. Minimum age: 25.

Battered Women’s Shelter: Volunteers needed for a variety of tasks to keep the shelter running smooth. Minimum age: 18.

Boys & Girls Clubs of the Western Reserve: Seeking a volunteer who has desire & patience to work with children. You will assist children with various activities such as art, sports, games, in the tech lab, meals and special events. Administrative duties also available. Opportunity is available during the school year, 2:30 p.m. until 7 p.m. Groups and Families welcome! Hours are flexible. Minimum age: 16, 14 with adult supervision.

CASA/GAL Program of Summit County: Volunteer Child Advocates needed to independently investigate and monitor cases of abuse, neglect and/or dependency. Two-year commitment. Minimum age: 21.

Cascade Locks Park Association: Volunteers needed weekdays to serve as tour and information guides for groups of school-aged children. Minimum age: 18.

Christian Fellowship Basketball League: Volunteers needed Mondays, Thursdays, and Saturdays from 5:30 p.m. – 9:30 p.m. to help with coaching, physical fitness training, score & time keeping and officiating basketball games. Minimum age: 16, 13 with adult supervision.

First Tee of Akron: Volunteers needed Mondays through Thursdays from 2:30 p.m. - 5:30 p.m. for a minimum of one day a week for 8 weeks (September-October and/or April-May) to assist with SNAG, a golf program for children grades 1-5. Minimum age: 18.

Girl Scouts of North East Ohio: Seeking Volunteers to work with girls in your desired age group on Girl Scout programming (Journey's). The program sessions are held locally at libraries, rec centers, etc. The sessions are 2 hours long, each week over 6-8 weeks. All materials including lesson plans are provided, training is free. Volunteers may facilitate one 6-8 week session per year or as many as they prefer. Minimum age: 18, 15 with adult supervision.

Hospice of the Western Reserve: Volunteers are needed to provide social (play) visits, give respite for a few hours to the caregivers, work on crafts or art projects, entertain children with music/games, hold/and or feed a baby, and many other opportunities. Minimum age: 18.

HM Life Opportunity Services: Volunteers needed 5 p.m. – 6:30 p.m. Mondays (Akron location) and 5:30 p.m. – 7 p.m. Wednesdays (Northfield location) to spend time and assist children with crafts, computers and games. Minimum age: 15.

Junior Achievement of North Central Ohio Inc.: Volunteers needed to work with local teachers and lead five 30-45 minute activities to a classroom of students, grades K-5. Programs include age-appropriate lessons with a focus on teaching about work readiness skills, financial literacy and/or entrepreneurship. This opportunity takes place once a week for 5 weeks during normal weekday school hours or as coordinated with a classroom teacher. Training provided (one hour). Minimum age: 16.

Lake Anna YMCA: We are looking for Volunteers to help with our Youth Swim Lessons. Lessons are held on Monday, Tuesday, and Thursday evenings, and Saturday mornings. You can choose one or two days a week to help out! As a Volunteer in our Aquatic Department, you will help children in our community learn life-long skills, build self confidence, and stay healthy! Minimum age: 14.

OPEN M: Volunteers needed from 8 a.m. – 11:15 a.m. on the 3rd Friday of each month to assist with “Mountain of Food Giveaway”. Minimum age: flexible; younger volunteers accepted with adult supervision.

YMCA Riverfront Family (Cuyahoga Falls): Volunteers needed throughout the week to assist with youth sports programs. Minimum age: 16.
