Subscription Series Brings Laughs, Star Power, and Magic
Two Musicals and a Classic Comedy Fills the Main Stage

(Monday, September 16, 2013 – Akron, Ohio) – Anything can happen in the ambitious 2013-14 Firestone Theatre Season. The most comprehensive season yet includes two popular musicals, a classic comedy, and numerous other performances sure to please a wide variety of patrons and arts supporters.
The main stage series kicks off our new season Shakespeare’s classic romp, Comedy of Errors. This laugh-out-loud farce is set in a Vaudeville context and is set to premier on our stage October 3, 4, and 5, 2013. It is under the direction of guest artist Aubrey Caldwell Davis. Tickets to Comedy of Errors are $5.00 in advance and $8.00 at the door. All curtain times are at 7:30 p.m. Reserved, VIP tickets are $13.00.
The starry musical Dreamgirls takes the stage November 20, 21, 22, and 23, 2013. This tuneful Motown-flavored show is under the direction of Mark A. Zimmerman with music direction by guest artist Ron Hazelett and choreography by guest artist Sheena Mason. Curtain time is at 7:00 p.m. on Wednesday, 7:30 p.m. on Thursday and Friday, and 2:30 and 7:30 p.m. on Saturday. Tickets for Dreamgirls are $8.00 in advance and $10.00 at the door. Reserved, VIP tickets are $13.00. A special Soul Food Dinner will be held at 5:00 p.m. and 6:00 p.m. between performances on Saturday, November 23, 2013.
The Akron School for the Arts is set to be the third school in the nation to present the magical musical Mary Poppins when it completes the main stage season with performances on March 19, 20, 21, and 22, 2014. Curtain time is at 7:00 p.m. on Wednesday, 7:30 p.m. on Thursday and Friday, and 2:30 and 7:30 p.m. on Saturday. Tickets for Mary Poppins are $10.00 in advance and $12.00 at the door. Reserved, VIP tickets are $15.00. A special Fish & Chips Dinner will be held at 5:00 p.m. and 6:00 p.m. between performances on Saturday, March 22, 2014. A special High Tea with Mary Poppins will be held at 11:00 and 1:00 p.m. on Saturday, March 15, 2014.
A reasonably priced subscription is available for the main stage shows and more. An adult subscription can be purchased for as little as $30.00 which represents a 50 percent savings for the season. A student subscription can be purchased for $20.00. A reserved, VIP subscription can be purchased for $36.00 and includes a reserved seat for each of the main stage shows, entry to the second stage performances, and access to a special VIP room before and at intermission of each main stage performance. Second stage performances include a wide range of theatre and other performances. The series commences with a number of open rehearsals for the Akron School for the Arts improv troup, frys w/ tht? An audience is invited to attend and participate starting with the first performance to be held at 7:00 p.m. on October 29, 2013. The series continues with the performance of the annual 24-Hour Theatre Project at 7:00 p.m. on November 8, 2013. The annual student band-centered rock-and-roll show, StoneStock 2013, hits the stage at 7:00 p.m. on December 6, 2013. The annual One-Act Play Festival appears on our stage at 7:30 p.m. on January 9, 2014. The second stage series concludes with the annual Spring Dance Concert presented at 7:30 p.m. on April 4 and 5, 2014. All second stage events are included in the subscription series. A special performance of Dear Gabby: The Confessions of an Over-Achiever directed by guest artist Elynmarie Kazle will be held on a date not yet determined.
Two additional performances not included on the subscription series are designed especially for children. A performance of Schoolhouse Rock Live, Jr. will be held at the Akron Civic Theatre at 2:30 p.m. on Sunday, November 10, 2013. This fun and educational musical is produced by Firestone Theatre under the direction of guest artist and Miller South School teacher Donna Kopcsick and presented by the Akron Civic Theatre as part of their Sunday Family Series. Tickets can be purchased at the Civic box office or on their website. Our production of Schoolhouse Rock Live, Jr. is available to tour to elementary schools throughout the Akron area. A special performance presented by the Frisch Marionette Company of Cincinnati rounds out our season. These master puppeteers will present their version of The Wizard of Oz featuring their beautiful, hand-crafted puppets. Performances will be held on Wednesday, May 22, 2013. Firestone Theatre is the award-winning play-production component of the Akron School for the Arts housed at Firestone High School. Firestone Theatre was named an “Outstanding School” by the Educational Theatre Association in 2013. The curricular track of Firestone Theatre is accessible to all rising ninth-grade students via open enrollment and a formal audition.
