Jordan Feliciano and Steven Planitzer honored at National Speech and Debate Tournament

Jordan Feliciano and Steven Planitzer from Norton High School received honors at the 2013 National Forensics League National Speech and Debate Tournament in Birmingham, Alabama last week. Jordan Feliciano advanced to the national semi finals in Humorous Interpretation, where he won 9th place in the nation. Feliciano bested hundreds of other competitors in Humorous Interpretation and was recognized as a national semi finalist during the final round of competition on Thursday evening. Feliciano is coached by Norton teacher and speech coach Tricia Pletcher. Steven Planitzer competed in Congressional Debate. Planitzer was elected Presiding Officer of his Congressional Chamber, and this honor resulted in him being awarded an NFL trophy gavel. Planitzer is coached by Norton alumnus and debate coach Anthony Paridon.

Both Felciano and Planitzer participated with the NHS Speech and Debate Team at 10 regular season tournaments, as well as the Ohio High School Speech League State Finals in March, where Feliciano finished 2nd place in his event. It was the second trip to the state tournament for both students. Planitzer will enter the 11th grade in the fall and plans to continue his career in Congressional Debate. Feliciano will attend The Ohio State University in the fall where he will begin work towards a career in medicine.

Nearly 3,000 students participated in the 2013 NFL National Tournament, billed as the world's largest academic competition. The event drew visitors from across the country and beyond. Top performers take home more than $200,000 in college scholarships.

To attend, students must qualify at one of NFL’s 108 district tournaments. National competition occurs in eleven main events—Policy Debate, Public Forum Debate, Lincoln-Douglas Debate, Congressional Debate–House, Congressional Debate–Senate, Original Oratory, United States Extemporaneous Speaking, International Extemporaneous Speaking, Humorous Interpretation, Dramatic Interpretation, and Duo Interpretation—as well as seven consolation and supplemental events.
