Youth Leadership Camps Return to Akron Area for Summer Fun

UPublish story by Emily Clark

Through teamwork and thinking outside the box, students complete difficult challenges.

June 14, 2013 – Cleveland, Ohio - In the midst of sports clinics and adventure camps, music lessons and dance practice, a different sort of youth development program has emerged, and is taking Northeast Ohio by storm. In the past five years, Effective Leadership Academy has worked with over 3,000 students, and the organization continues to grow exponentially. This summer, the organization is running over twelve one-week camps in Northeast Ohio, several of which branch out from greater Cleveland into the Akron area.

According to Founder and Chief Executive Officer Flo Brett, this 501(3)c non-profit has been so successful because, “ELA’s camps and clubs teach students the essential life skills they don’t have time to learn in school to help them succeed as future leaders.” Through interactive games and activities, students learn skills ranging from problem solving and goal setting to understanding team dynamics and learning how to communicate in a group setting. The organization offers two main programs for leadership development, Club Lead and Camp Lead. While Club Lead occurs during the school year, Camp Lead’s one-week immersion program provides leadership through all-day fun throughout the three summer months. The theme of this year’s camp is Fish Tank, based off the hit TV show Shark Tank. Students will encounter and solve real-life corporate problems, learning more about themselves as leaders, and team dynamics as a whole.

Nick Gasbarro, an ELA Alum from 2011 (current student at Kenyon College and 2011 graduate from Western Reserve Academy), said “ELA helped me further develop, foster, and hone my leadership abilities. It assisted me in knowing how to deal with certain situations, helped me alter the way I look at things, allowing me to think outside the box to a greater extent, and improved my confidence in leadership.”

Camp Lead travels to multiple other locations throughout the area from now through August, including Western Reserve Academy and St. Hilary. For more information, or to find a Camp near you, go to
