Creating a Matrix to include in the 911 response every Automated External Defibrillator (AED) in Summit County

UPublish story by The Austen BioInnovation Institute in Akron

PICTURE THIS: You have just collapsed from a Sudden Cardiac Arrest. Time is of the essence. For every minute of delay in delivering a life-saving shock from a defibrillator, your chance of survival drops by 10%. A call is placed to 911 and EMS is dispatched.

Unfortunately, the paramedic unit is stuck in traffic, on another run or 10 minutes away. In this scenario, there is only a 5% chance you will survive.

What if an Automated External Defibrillator (AED) was available next door? What if the person in charge of that AED received a text message or phone call at the same moment the paramedics were dispatched? What if your life-saving shock could be delivered 8 minutes before EMS arrives? Your chance of survival could be over 50%!

The Austen BioInnovation Institute will be holding a seminar on Wednesday, May 15 from 4-5 p.m. that will address how to develop an emergency response plan to include every AED in Summit County as a potential responder to the # 1 killer in America.
